R.S.Thomas's Wales
with my travel diary and information about the place
Cardiff Holyhead Bangor Chirk Hanmer Manafon Eglwys-fach Aberdaron Sarn-y-Plas, Plas-yn-Rhiew Llanfairynghornwy Porthmadog

It is toward the end of the First World War, and the place:
the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire. A little boy is playing on the beach.
Over the sea towards the south-west there was tall gray-blue hills
to be seen. His father points to them. "That's Wales," he says, in English.
R.S.Thomas, "Former Paths"
(or "The Paths Gone By")

It [a journey of his life] formed a kind of oval ...,
a pretty limited circuit to
correspond to his limited experience of life.
